Fried green tomatoes are an interesting and tasty dish, loved for their crisp golden crust and slightly tangy flavour. We make them from still unripe green tomatoes, cut into slices, coated in flour, egg and breadcrumbs and fried in hot oil. Serve them on their own, as a side dish or as a snack – they go especially well with different sauces.
Fried green tomatoes
Description
Slices of unripe green tomatoes coated in flour, egg and a crumb mixture with sesame and Grana Padano, then fried until golden. Crisp outside, pleasantly tangy inside – a side dish, a main course or a snack.Ingredients
Method
-
Wash the green tomatoes and cut them into slices about 0.5–1 cm thick. Salt them lightly and leave for 5–10 minutes, then pat them dry with kitchen paper.
-
Coat the slices first in flour, then in beaten egg and finally in the mixture of breadcrumbs, sesame seeds and Grana Padano. For a thicker, crispier crust, repeat the egg and crumb steps.
-
Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the tomatoes over a medium heat for about 4 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crisp.
Note
- Serve with a sauce of your choice, for example a yoghurt or garlic dip.
