Onion is a staple not only in the kitchen but also in the traditional home remedies of many Slovenian families. Onion tea is one of those old recipes: onion simmered in water, left to steep and strained, then sweetened with honey and lemon to taste.

It is very easy to make, and we almost always have an onion at hand. Children over one year old can drink it too – many of them like its mild, slightly sweet taste.

Method

  1. Pour the water into a small pan or kettle and bring it to the boil.
  2. While you wait for the water to boil, peel the onion and cut it into large pieces.
  3. When the water boils, add the onion, cover the pan with a lid and simmer gently for 10 minutes.
  4. After 10 minutes, take the pan off the heat and leave it covered for 20 minutes.
  5. Strain the tea and add honey and lemon to taste.
  6. Drink the tea freshly made whenever possible.

Note

  • Make it fresh each time; it tastes best warm.
  • Not suitable for children under one year old (honey in particular is not given to babies under one).
